Developing and Using Common Assessments in Science

In this free, online workshop series, we will explore a process for designing, administering, and scoring common assessments that require students to apply three dimensions of science to explain phenomena and solve problems that are meaningful to students and important to their communities. The approach builds from our collaborative work with BSCS on the 5D Assessment Project.

This workshop is for:

  • District leaders

  • Professional development leaders

  • School-based teacher leaders

All too often, the push for common assessments can result in poorly aligned assessments and data that few people know how to use. But investing in helping everyone learn how to design and use common assessments is a good way to build capacity for meaningful science teaching and assessment. Doing so requires a systematic approach that takes into account alignment of assessments with the vision of equitable teaching and learning from the Framework for K-12 Science Education, as well as students’ interests, experiences, and identities. It requires thoughtful allocation of resources for administration and scoring. And it requires guidance for how to use information from assessments as evidence to improve teaching and learning.

Join us on Zoom for this four-part series to guide you through a process for developing, administering, and using common assessments. All sessions will meet from 3:00-4:00pm Mountain Time.

Session 1: February 18, 2025 - Building and Preparing the Team

Session 2: March 4, 2025 - Designing Assessments

Session 3: March 18, 2025 - Scoring Assessments

Session 4: April 1, 2025 - Using Assessment Data for Improvement

Note: This series is built as a sequence, so we request attendance at all four sessions for registrants.
